Extreme weather is a part of life here in south Louisiana. And while hurricanes get all the attention when it comes to roofing, we see more damage inflicted by hail storms than anything else.
The problematic part about a hail-damaged roof is that it can be hard to evaluate.
It is even complicated when the insurance company sends out their adjuster to review your damage and tells you nothing is wrong, or you just need a few new shingles.
We recently completed a full roof replacement of a hail-damaged roof for a homeowner in Covington Country Club Estates.
But it wasn’t that easy. The adjuster initially said “no”.
We’ll share the story with you in case you’re ever in a situation where you find yourself in a disagreement with an insurance adjuster on your roof!
Why Hail Damage is Tricky
You might not think of West St. Tammany as a hotbed of hail storms. But we do get a LOT of them.
And they do significant damage to roofs. Especially older roofs that are already worn and missing granules.
Hail damage is not always visible to the untrained eye, especially from the ground.
It takes experience to walk a roof and spot hail damage. And even more experience to know when that hail damage has compromised the roof enough to warrant repairs or a replacement.
Battling with Adjusters & Insurance Companies
Don’t feel bad if you can’t tell whether or not your roof has been damaged by a hail storm here in Covington or Mandeville.
Insurance adjusters often can’t either.
Or maybe they just don’t want to pay for a new roof?
Over the years we’ve met with countless adjusters who walked a roof, only to claim the damage was insufficient to warrant a roof replacement.
That was the case with this project.
The adjuster found that the hail damage only warranted the replacement of some shingles.
The problem?
#1 - the homeowner's shingles had been discontinued and could not be matched color-wise.
#2 - upon closer inspection, we found significant damage to most of the roof, including dent marks in the soft metal around the roof.
After several meetings with the adjuster and sharing our findings, they finally agreed to replace the roof.
The Importance of Being Thorough
In addition to the hail damage, the homeowner also reported an ongoing problem with leaking from an area around the chimney.
As we began roof repairs, we found damage around the chimney and installed what roofers call a “chimney cricket” to keep water from leaking down the side of the chimney.
This extra level of detail ensured that the new roof completely addressed all of the issues with the roofing system.
Upgrading to a Louisiana Fortified Roof
You’ve probably heard of a Fortieid roof because the grants offered by the state of Louisiana have gotten a lot of attention in the media.
However, you may not know that you can upgrade any new roof to a Fortified roof, even without the grant!
In this case, our client wanted the additional protection features offered by the Fortified Roofing System we installed. And the insurance company even offered a discount to help offset the additional cost of the upgrade!
